All workshops are on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm
at the Nashville Peace and Justice Center
#1: Intro to Organizing–Vision & Values, Power & Leadership
What is our vision for the future? What values attract us to this challenging work? How do we shift the balance of power in our direction? What are the characteristics of good leadership? What are the forces that are aligned against our vision? This workshop will engage participants in a discussion that will help us own our power to effect change here in Nashville and Tennessee.
#2: Fundraising for Justice
Fundraising is a critical and integral part of social change, and anyone can learn how to do it! This workshop addresses how organizational boards, staff, constituents and communities can work together to build a strategic alliance for raising money for your organization.
#3: Strategic planning for grassroots organizations
Know where you’re going and how you’ll get there. Learn to set achievable short and long-term goals, build power within your organization, research strategically, find and grab strategic opportunities, and lead your group in making decisions.
#4: Planning Public Events, Effective Public Speaking, & Getting Great Media Coverage
Public events are an excellent way to unite the community. Learn the secrets to getting great attendance and media coverage, making the event flow smoothly, and engaging the audience with creativity and fun, plus tips on location, timing, accessibility, and other key logistical issues. Speaking to groups of people and to the media can be intimidating, but it is also a vital part of organizing. Done right, it can inspire and motivate people, clear up misconceptions, and build public support for your issues .
#5: Coalition-Building
Building partnerships with individuals and groups in the community is the heart of organizing. We’ll take an in-depth look at issues of race, class, gender, age, ethnicity, language and other politics of identity in organizing, then use this analysis to discuss ways to build coalitions, delegate responsibility, create new leadership roles, and build stronger diverse organizations.
#6: Managing & Resolving Conflicts
What happens when conflicts arise within your coalition? This workshop offers skills and strategies for understanding, managing, and resolving conflict in collaborative relationships. Our focus will be on getting to win/win solutions that will make your organization stronger and more cohesive.
#7: Citizen Lobbying
How can we influence local and state officials for more just legislation? Learn about our Metro Council and state legislature – composition, procedures, key players – and some of the primary legislative struggles over the past few years. Through case study and discussion, we will learn fundamental skills in citizen lobbying.
Graduation Party!
After hours of intense training together, time is taken to celebrate the new skills we’ve acquired, the new confidence achieved, the new connections and collaborations being born. It’s a time to bring your family and friends for a potluck celebration, fun and fellowship- plus networking with local social justice campaigns to put these skills to work!
